An introduction to the art and science of Herbal Medicine. We review the principles by which the world of plant medicine has been viewed from the western perspective. An Excerpt from workshop handout: Plant Spirit Medicine
Like all creatures of nature, plants have their own natural wisdom. The plant spirits offer a unique system of healing and health care. They grow in abundance around us and offer a marvelous source of food and nourishment. They have medicinal, health, cosmetic, nutritional, culinary, decorative and aromatherapeutic benefits.
The most powerful use of plants comes when you connect with the heart and spirit of the plant. You gain an insight not only to its medicinal, cosmetic, or culinary uses but also to its reason for being, its dharma, and its gift to share with all of us. Just like humans the plants have spirits that long to be honored and fulfilled. In offering their mysterious benefits to us we complete their spiritual goals, we help them fulfill their purpose.
Our relationship with plants is as multi-faceted as our relationship with people. Each plant is composed of hundreds of different chemicals that constitute a complete “personality”. Growing conditions, the environment, nutrients etc. can contribute to the personality of the plant. The interaction or relationship between the herbalist who uses the plant and the plant will influence the action of the herb; this is the Medicine Maker’s Effect. Every relationship is a dynamic dance between two or more beings; it is no different with plants. Plants are not static inorganic objects, but living breathing evolving beings like we are. Just as people have many different characteristics, personalities and skills so do our plant friends. This is the reason why a single plant may have so many, and often conflicting, actions.
If you are aware and have worked with spirit guides, power animals, angels, or any other divine creature that aids you in your life journey, know that each one of you also have plant spirits which are your allies. Through meditation, journeying or just sitting with a new plant each day you will find your plant ally and then you can connect with all the wisdom of the plant world.
